Pollination ecology and floral scent chemistry of Philodendron fragrantissimum (Araceae)

چکیده
In French Guiana, Philodendron fragrantissimum (Hook.) G.Don was specifically pollinated by a single species of night-active cyclocephaline scarab, Cyclocephala simulatrix Höhne. Its inflorescences exhibited short-lasting anthesis (~30 h) and characteristic floral traits such as thermogenesis, edible/nutritious tissues, profuse scent emission. Our insect exclusion experiments indicate that entomophilous cross-pollination is obligatory for P. fragrantissimum, with olfactory signalling playing pivotal role in pollinator attraction. Three volatile organic compounds – methyl benzoate, (Z)-jasmone, dehydrojasmone dominate the pistillate phase (84–99%), but their relative proportions were different according to headspace sampling method used, dynamic or static. Local pollination services provided both female male C. are effective, evidenced high visitation rate (>70%) resulted 55% maturing into infructescences. Moreover, highly efficient, since 2–3 beetles sufficed pollinate an average 94% flowers.

Active pollination favours sexual dimorphism in floral scent.
Zoophilous flowers often transmit olfactory signals to attract pollinators. In plants with unisexual flowers, such signals are usually similar between the sexes because attraction of the same animal to both male and female flowers is essential for conspecific pollen transfer. Here, we present a remarkable example of sexual dimorphism in floral signal observed in reproductively highly specialize...

Floral Evolution of Philodendron Subgenus Meconostigma (Araceae)
Elucidating the evolutionary patterns of flower and inflorescence structure is pivotal to understanding the phylogenetic relationships of Angiosperms as a whole. The inflorescence morphology and anatomy of Philodendron subgenus Meconostigma, belonging to the monocot family Araceae, has been widely studied but the evolutionary relationships of subgenus Meconostigma and the evolution of its flowe...

متن کاملFloral scent composition predicts bee pollination system in five butterfly bush (Buddleja, Scrophulariaceae) species.
Traditionally, plant-pollinator interactions have been interpreted as pollination syndrome. However, the validity of pollination syndrome has been widely doubted in modern studies of pollination ecology. The pollination ecology of five Asian Buddleja species, B. asiatica, B. crispa, B. forrestii, B. macrostachya and B. myriantha, in the Sino-Himalayan region in Asia, flowering in different loca...
